Memory Box (2012)
Created during an artist residency with the Edinburgh Mela, Niroshini used her own cultural history to create an installation of audio memoir, music, video and visual ephemera.   Niroshini generated original writing and sifted through audio recordings, film footage, interviews with 1st and 2nd generation migrants, letters, lists, tickets, receipts, objects and photos covering a period from the 1940's to the present to document the experience of migration from Sri Lanka to the UK from a Sri Lankan Diaspora perspective. She also took inspiration from the process of of ageing and memory loss, and used the structure of memory boxes used in dementia support to inform the final piece.
Memory Box is an act of remembering, of documenting fragments of life story to create a collective experience of memory that honours the past.
